Joe Media LAB
Joe Lab is an experimental structure attached to CICANT working in the areas of Smart Media, VR and mobile technologies.
The Lab was originally developed in collaboration with Samsung and nowadays provides technical and artistic support to research projects that deal with this field beside working as a testbed for CICANT initiatives in this area
MovLab – Laboratory of Technologies for Interactions and Interfaces
The acronym focus in the integration of the two major trends: The living and the simulated Movement in an atmosphere of interactive team work. A cross disciplinary empowerment, whose mission is to develop and improve the core technologies for comprehensive computational animation and human and animal motion modelling, always in the interaction with other scientific areas of CICANT, other ULHT Faculties and international collaborations.
MovLab central technology is based in high speed Motion Capture (Vicon system) synchronized with dynamometry (AMTI plate). By the synchronization of those technologies, the development of 3D models associated to methods of inverse dynamics create the possibility of better understand the assessment of the inside system functional analysis in humans or animals (specifically, horses). In parallel the interactions of human movement analysis with virtual reality open an area of study human behavior influenced by psychological imposed conditions.
Early Visual Media Lab
The Early Visual Media Lab is a cross-disciplinary research lab focused on the study and digital mediation of visual media heritage. Our mission is to build a new understanding of historical visual media through digital technologies. Heritage accessibility and contextualization are the main concerns of our collaboration with museums and media archives for the creation of innovative online databases and for the curation and reuse of digitized collections. Our research projects have been dedicated to the creation of museum interfaces, namely using virtual reality, and to the production of catalogues raisonnés with comprehensive pictures of the work of 19th and 20th-century photographers by combining their collections kept in different institutions and by linking them with different media objects. Drawing on one of CICANT’s core areas of expertise, the Early Visual Media Lab combines a pedagogical and a research mission by providing resources (databases, digital archives, publications, museum interfaces) aimed at increasing both the integration of old media within the university’s curricula and the public knowledge and access to this visual legacy.
Lisbon Film Hub
LFH was the original brand – now replaced with Reshape Studios – of the cinema and audiovisual infrastructure of facilities and equipment in the area of digital media production.
Reshape studios includes a large number of labs covering all areas of digital cinema production and integrates a number of labs specifically tailored to support research projects that resort to these technologies.
The structure was developed in partnership with several companies including Avid, NOS and Sony.
Media Literacy and Civic Cultures Lab
The MeLCi Lab – Media Literacy and Civic Cultures Lab is a laboratory of CICANT – Centre for Research in Applied Communication, Culture, and New Technologies. The primary mission of MeLCi Lab is to aggregate researchers and the research done at CICANT in the field of media education and civic cultures, in connection with everyday life in today’s deep mediatized and digitized society.
Besides, MeLCi Lab also is a space for tracking research, researchers, entities and institutions that, in Portugal and abroad, work in the field of media education and civic cultures.
The MeLCi Lab intends to affirm itself as the place for the exchange of theoretical and empirical experiences in the field, both in academia and in the civil society. Even if MeLCi Lab areas have significantly evolved in recent years, there is still much work to be done, namely in the level of public policies, audiences and training proposals. For this reason, MeLCi Lab will be attentive to these needs to undertake actions to improve the field.
At MeLCi Lab, we are sure that this mission is also a mission of committed citizenship in building a more cohesive, dynamic and civic society.
