Cláudia Álvares (Coordinator)

Claudia Alvares has a Ph.D from the University of London and is Associate Professor at Lusófona University (Lisbon, Portugal). Evaluator for the European Research Council, she was elected President of the European Communication Research and Education Association (2012-2016). She has published in international journals such as Javnost-The Public, The International Journal of Iberian Studies, Culture, Theory and Critique, The European Journal of Communication, The International Communication Gazette, Discourse & Society (book review), Feminist Media Studies, and Empedocles – The European Journal for the Philosophy of Communication. Among her book publications are Media in Europe: New Questions for Research and Policy (co-authored, 2014), Gendered Transformations: Theory and Practices on Gender and Media (co-edited, 2010), Teorias e Práticas dos Media: Situando o Local no Global (co-edited, 2010), Representing Culture: Essays on Identity, Visuality and Technology (edited, 2008), Humanism after Colonialism (single-authored, 2006).  In recent years, Alvares has been Principal Investigator of three research projects funded by the Portuguese Science and Technology Foundation in the area of gender and media,  and researcher of two international consortia, one of which also in the area of gender and media. Alvares is interested in media, gender, identity politics, and populism.
