Intersectionality in media, art and culture

Editor: Carla Cerqueira
Foreseen Release: 2024

This book is intended to be an important contribution in the field of feminist studies of media, art and culture at national and international level. We bring to the discussion in this field one of the central concepts that needs further exploration - the intersectional approach. Intersectionality recognizes multiple systems of oppression such as patriarchy, ethnical and racial/white supremacy, heteronormativity, ageism, disability and capitalism as interlocking and as disadvantaging and privileging individuals at multiple axes of identity. This is an approach to recognize the differences and relative

power and privilege and it is crucial to a critical feminist media, art and culture analysis (see previous articles and editions coordinated by the editor of the proposal of the book, such as Cerqueira & Magalhães, 2017; Cerqueira & Magalhães, 2019).

Currently the reality in these fields is too complex and has undergone several changes, so only an analysis that takes into account this deep understanding can better serve the field of research and contribute to social change. This book is composed of several chapters that focus on different realities, with various methodologies, and geographical contexts, allowing a situated knowledge. Its authors are already recognized in the field of research, with consolidated scientific production. They focus on recent studies and have as their lens of analysis the intersectional approach. Therefore, this book fills an existing gap in the scientific production of this area, since there are still few studies focusing on the relevance of the intersectional approach in the field of media, art and culture. Moreover, the existing scientific production is scattered and does not allow to show the scope and challenges that intersectionality poses in this field of research.

Moreover, this proposal dialogues very well with CICANT's two core areas: Media, Society and Literacies (MSL) and Media Arts, Creative Industries and Technologies (MACIT), as it presents studies that cross them in a very explicit way.
