CICANT Researcher co-author of new book on Hate speechs, journalism and participation

Discurso de Ódio, Jornalismo e Participação das Audiências. Enquadramento, regulação e boas práticas is the title of the book that has just been published in the Media Regulation/Almedina Collection, promoted by the Regulatory Authority for the Media (ERC) with Maria José Brites researcher at CICANT as co-autor.

Coordinated by Marisa Torres da Silva (ICNOVA/NOVA FCSH/co-coordination of the Public and Audience WG) the book is co-authored by João Gonçalves (Erasmus University Rotterdam), Pedro Coelho (ICNOVA/NOVA FCSH/SIC) and Researcher Maria José Brites (CICANT/Universidade Lusófona, CICANT/coordination of the Publics and Audiences WG).

The book seeks to contribute to the study and reflection around hate speech in contemporary societies, looking in particular at the participatory spaces hosted by the news media, such as online comments. The work includes a case study on the presence of incivility and hate speech in the online comment boxes of several newspapers during the campaigns for the 2015 and 2019 Legislatures and, also, suggestions of good practices for news organisations with a view to combating hate speech.

The synopsis, table of contents and introduction to the book can be found on the Almedina bookshop website.
