CICANT researcher discusses discusses gender inequalities in videogames in Equality Talks Project
CICANT researcher Carla Sousa gave an invited talk on gender inequalities in videogames on March 8th, 2023, as part of the Equality Talks Project, promoted by Associação Mais Cidadania, and funded by Cidad@s Ativ@s programme. The programme is financed by EEA Grants, namely Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, and is managed in Portugal by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in consortium with the Bissaya Barreto Foundation. The talk was requested by a group of youth from Escola Profissional Bento de Jesus Caraça, that wanted to shed light on the pervasive and harmful gender stereotypes that exist in videogames and how they perpetuate inequality.
During the talk, Carla presented the latest research on the subject and discussed the ways in which videogames can both reflect and shape societal attitudes towards gender. The talk also highlighted the need for greater diversity and representation in videogames, as well as the importance of creating more inclusive gaming environments. The talk was well-received by youth, who engaged in a lively Q&A session afterwards.
