Instituto Palavra Aberta

Instituto Palavra Aberta is a civil, non-political and secular organisation that promotes freedom of expression, information, the press and the right to advertise, values it considers essential for a democratic and sustainable society. The organisation defends respect for diversity and individual freedom, encouraging cultural and educational development without censorship or discrimination. At the same time, the Institute believes that freedom of expression should not justify criminal practices, hate speech or disinformation that jeopardises the democratic environment, and it remains vigilant against the misuse of this freedom.

The Institute values professional journalism as an essential means of combating disinformation and considers press freedom crucial to preserving information as a public good. It also supports self-regulation in advertising and the independent functioning of the media, as well as defending the right of communication and technology platforms to moderate content according to their guidelines and current laws. The institution encourages media education, individual autonomy and discernment in the choice of information sources, to strengthen the exercise of freedom of expression and citizenship.
