FEMglocal’s First Seminar - Contemporary social movements and media: interactions and contradictions

The first seminar organized by the research project FEMglocal - Glocal feminist movements: interactions and contradictions, funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) through national funds (PTDC/COM-CSS/4049/2021), took place on October 10th, 2023. Titled “Contemporary social movements and media: interactions and contradictions”, this seminar provided a vibrant platform for discussing a myriad of compelling topics, including activism, social movements, communication methods, media representation (or, at times, its lack thereof), and cutting-edge research on social movements, among others.

The morning session featured an enlightening roundtable discussion on “Researching activisms in the Portuguese context” with distinguished speakers Rosa Cabecinhas, Carla Malafaia, Ricardo Campos, and Sofia Caldeira, followed by an inspiring plenary session on “Ambivalences in activisms, feminisms, and media”, featuring two of the project’s esteemed consultants, Tina Askanius and Kaitlynn Mendes.

In the afternoon, the seminar ventured closer to the public as it moved to MIRA FORUM. The two captivating round tables in the afternoon, “Journalism and feminisms: experiences and challenges” (with Aline Flor, Júlia Garraio, and Simão Freitas) and “Communication strategies of activist movements” (with Liliana Rodrigues, Sílvia Carreira, Joana Cabral, and Cristian Georgescu), drew a full house of attentive attendees, actively engaging in thought-provoking conversations.

It was an extremely fruitful day where a multitude of ideas, perspectives, and experiences were shared and discussed. To all those who were present and collaborated with the project, we extend a heartfelt thank you!

About FEMglocal

FEMglocal - Glocal feminist movements: interactions and contradictions is a research project funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) through national funds (PTDC/COM-CSS/4049/2021), hosted by Lusófona University. This project aims to analyze glocal feminist movements rooted in the Portuguese context and to map feminist activist movements in Portugal, studying their history, life flows, internal and external communication dynamics, as well as the interactions and contradictions between the global and the local, the digital and the face-to-face. FEMglocal’s goal is to contribute to the recovery of the historical memory of social invisibility of feminist movements in the national territory, focusing on strategies of social mobilization, communication, and media visibility.
