On April 13, CIVITAS Braga, in collaboration with “Abril é Agora” [“April is now”], Cultra, and the Braga Democrats Commission, hosted the International Conference “A extrema direita e o ataque à democracia - 50 anos do 25 de abril” [“The Far-Right and the Assault on Democracy – 50 years since April 25th”]. The conference aimed to address the rise of extreme-right movements that threaten democratic processes, challenge civilizational achievements and seek to undermine political, social, economic, educational, and cultural advancements made possible since the latter half of the 20th century, particularly, in Portugal, following the Carnation Revolution on April 25th, 1974.
During the event, Carla Cerqueira, Principal Investigator of the FEMglocal - Glocal feminist movements: interactions and contradictions research project (funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) through national funds – PTDC/COM-CSS/4049/2021 / DOI 10.54499/PTDC/COM-CSS/4049/2021), led a dynamic roundtable discussion on Feminism and the Far-Right. Joined by panelists Cecília Honório, Sheila Khan, and Virgínia Ferreira, the discussion explored the intersection of feminist ideals with the challenges posed by far-right ideologies. Their insights shed light on the complex dynamics shaping contemporary socio-political landscapes.
