The second session of the Entre Culturas [Between Cultures] cycle, titled “Bertina Lopes: non dimenticare”, took place on November 23rd at 6:00 PM at Livraria do Gato Vadio. Following an inaugural session on “Camões na Ilha de Moçambique”, this event was dedicated to Bertina Lopes, an artist born in Lourenço Marques (now Maputo) in 1924. Lopes studied painting and sculpture in Lisbon and returned to Mozambique in 1943. There, she devoted herself to teaching art and artistic creation, serving as the director of the Núcleo de Arte in the Mozambican capital. Recognized as a pioneer of modern art in Mozambique, she was forced into exile in Italy in the early 1960s for political reasons, where she remained until her death in 2012.
The session featured the participation of Francisco Topa, a professor at the Faculty of Arts of University of Porto (FLUP) and a researcher of Bertina Lopes’ work. Held in the year marking the centenary of Lopes' birth, the event revisited her enduring legacy.
This session was organized by Lurdes Macedo and Vanessa Ribeiro-Rodrigues (CICANT integrated researchers), together with Nuno Bessa Moreira. It was conducted in collaboration with CITCEM, FLUP, and SOPCOM's Visual Culture Working Group.
This cycle of scientific and cultural meetings, organized by CICANT, will continue until May 2025.
