FEMglocal at the 9th Week of Social Communication in Setúbal

Ana Sofia Pereira, Post-Doc Fellow of the research project FEMglocal - Glocal Feminist Movements: Interactions and Contradictions (financed by the Foundation for Science and Technology, FCT, through national funds - PTDC/COM-CSS/4049/2021) was a guest speaker at the 9th Week of Social Communication at the School of Education of the Polytechnic Institute of Setúbal on March 28th. She was joined by Rossana Torres (professor and director) in a session on militancy and activism in cinema moderated by Marta Alves (faculty member at ESE/IPS) and Tiago Andrade (student at the same school).

During the session, Pereira presented FEMglocal’s project and discussed the ways in which cinema, particularly documentary, can inspire action and engage viewers, as well as its potential to educate and raise awareness. She also explored the power of cinema as a medium for feminist and social activist demonstrations.

Speakers and audience examined the role of cinema in shaping our understanding of social and political issues and the potential for it to be used as a tool for activism and social change. Overall, the session was an enlightening exploration of the intersection of art and activism and the potential for cinema to spark and/or aid social and political movements.
