Mapping Media for Future Democracies - A Challenge for the Vitality and Sustainability of European Democracies

Over the next three years, MeDeMAP will conduct research focused on the conditions, functions, and impacts of media on European democracy. The research team aims to positively contribute to improving trust in democracy and European democratic institutions, the democratic quality of the media, and to catapult innovative policies and active and inclusive citizenship.

On the 8th and 10th of March took place the kick-off of the project MeDeMAP - Mapping Media for Future Democracies kick-off meeting (Project ref.: 101094984). The meeting took place in Vienna and was organized by the project coordinator - the Austrian Academy of Sciences.

MeDeMAP aims to set out future-proof pathways to strengthen democracy through improving accountability, transparency and effectiveness of media production and expanding active and inclusive citizenship. To do this, the project intends to clarify the extent to which certain media under which conditions perform which democratic functions for which audiences, thus making it apparent what is at stake for democratic media - and for democracy itself.

The project consortium includes 10 European entities with expertise in the areas of media, journalism, democracy, technology, and other related areas - Univerzity Karlovy (Czech Republic), Università di comunicazione e lingue, IULM (Italy), Uniwersytet Jagielloński (Poland), Community Medien Institut für Weiterbildung, Forschung und Beratung (COMMIT) (Austria), Lusófona University (Portugal), Tallinn University (Estonia), Institut Mines-Télécom (IMT) (France), Mary Immaculate College (Ireland) and Mirovni inštitut (Slovenia).
