FEMglocal at the FEMCORUS project's congress

From May 11th to 12th, the research project FEMglocal - Glocal Feminist Movements: Interactions and Contradictions research project (financed by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) through national funds - PTDC/COM-CSS/4049/2021) participated in the congress “Rewired and revamped? Media & trans/national feminisms in Europe and beyond” hosted by the Tampere University in Finland and organized by the FEMCORUS project.

Ana Sofia Pereira, FEMglocal’s Post-Doctoral fellow, delivered the paper “From Global to Local to Glocal - Transnational Feminist Movements: The news coverage of #MeToo in Portugal”, developed in collaboration with Carla Cerqueira and Célia Taborda (FEMglocal’s PI and Co-PI, respectively). In a panel moderated by Carla Cerqueira on “Gendered violence & #MeToo”, Ana Sofia Pereira reflected on how #MeToo, a transnational feminist movement with global, local, and glocal dimensions, manifested itself in Portugal, how it was mediated in the Público and Expresso newspapers and the impact it had nationally in discussing topics that are usually kept silent.

Carla Cerqueira, in a panel moderated by Ana Sofia Pereira on “Trans-local Feminism”, presented the paper “Once Upon a Time... A Historical Chronology on the Singularities of Portuguese Feminism(s)”, co-authored with Célia Taborda, Ana Sofia Pereira, and Priscilla Domingos (FEMglocal’s PhD Fellow). In this paper, Carla Cerqueira sought to provide a brief chronology of feminisms in Portugal, exploring the unique aspects of these movements within the context of Portugal’s conservative history, which was marked by a strong religious tradition and the longest dictatorship in 20th-century Europe (from 1926 to 1974). The purpose of this paper was also to contribute to the recovery of the historical memory of the singularities of Portuguese feminisms and their protagonists by making their stories visible and situating them within the broader framework of international feminisms and the feminist waves metaphor.
