Media Society and Literacies

Carla Cerqueira holds a PhD in Communication Sciences - specialization in Communication Psychology from the University of Minho, Portugal (2012), funded by Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology. From 2013 to 2019 she was a Postdoctoral researcher in Communication Sciences at the Communication and Society Research Centre (CECS) and an Assistant Professor at Lusófona University of Porto (ULP). From February 2019 to August 2020 she was a full-time researcher at the CECS and currently, she is an Assistant Professor at Lusófona University and a researcher at CICANT - The Centre for Research in Applied Communication, Culture, and New Technologies.

Her research interests include gender, feminisms, intersectionality, NGOs and media studies. She participated in diverse conferences and integrated scientific committees, editorial boards, scientific and social projects and events organizations. She integrates diverse national and international research projects; she is the principal investigator of the project "FEMglocal - Glocal feminist movements: interactions and contradictions (PTDC/COM-CSS/4049/2021) and the project "Network Voices: Women's participation in development processes (COFAC/ILIND/CICANT/1/2021). Currently she is a team member of the funded projects YouNDigital - Youth, News and Digital Citizenship (PTDC/COM-OUT/0243/2021); Gender in Hate Pandemics: Social Media, Covid 19 and Women Journalists (FCT ID 758936851); MigraMediaActs - Migrations, media and activisms in Portuguese language: decolonising mediascapes and imagining alternative futures (PTDC/COM-CSS/3121/2021), SPECULUM - Filming and looking at oneself in the mirror: the use of self-writing by Portuguese-speaking documentary filmmakers (EXPL/ART-CRT/0231/2021) and IMLab - The Joacine Katar Moreira Case Study (CICANT/Researcher/2020). She integrates COST Action "Women on the Move" (CA19112), "Making Young Researchers' Voices Heard for Gender Equality" (CA20137) and "LGBTI+ Social and Economic (in)equalities” (CA19103).

She was vice-chair of the Gender and Communication Section of the European Communication Research and Education Association (ECREA) and Gender and Communication YECREA representative. She has participated as a researcher and consultant in several academic and social funded projects in the area of Gender and Media. She is the chair of the Research & Policy Committee of GAMAG – Global Alliance on Media and Gender. She integrates the board of APEM – Portuguese Association of Women’s Studies and she is part of RTP's Opinion Council (mandate 2021-2025) as a member appointed by the NGOs to the Advisory Council of the Commission for Citizenship and Gender Equality.
