2024/2025 CCC/CICANT_ECATI Conferences

The Espaços Outros (“Other Spaces”) conference series is a collaboration between the Centro Cultural de Belém, ECATI (School of Communication, Architecture, Arts, and Information Technologies), and CICANT (Research Center in Applied Communication, Culture, and New Technologies) at Lusófona University in Lisbon. The 2024 theme, "The Margins of Freedom", invites reflection on the complex dimensions of freedom in commemoration of Portugal’s April 25 Revolution. This year’s programming explores how individuals and communities have historically created spaces for agency within restrictive environments. Held monthly on Saturdays at the MAC Auditorium in the Centro Cultural de Belém, including the next ones:

  • On September 7, 2024, Marta de Menezes presented "(In)consensus - Art and Science: a Negotiated Love Affair", discussing the creative collaboration between art and biology based on her extensive experience in experimental art.
  • On October 19, 2024, Jorge Ramos do Ó presented "Michel Foucault: Writing as an Art of Existence", exploring Foucault’s view of writing as a radical, reflective practice of freedom and self-invention.
  • On November 9, 2024, André Barata will present "Landscape-Space", a talk exploring the relationship between space, time, and ecological awareness. Barata examines how modernity’s standardized notions of space and time contrast with the need for unique, relational spaces that foster connection and reflection, advocating for landscape as a transformative, political force in how we experience and preserve our world.
  • On December 7, 2024, José Bragança de Miranda will present "Thinking Revolution," reflecting on revolution as a historical and speculative concept. In the 50th anniversary year of Portugal’s April 25 Revolution, Miranda will explore how revolution embodies the transition from servitude to justice, emphasizing its global impact and the need to prioritize its transformative potential.

Aiming to connect academic production with the broader community, this initiative offers a platform for knowledge exchange and pluralistic dialogue across fields including visual arts, cinema, performing and sound arts, communication, culture, architecture, and digital technologies.
