EXTERNAL IMAGES: FROM THE UNIVERSALISM OF BLUE MARBLE TO THE ABYSS OF THE BLACK HOLE

7th July 2021 / 5 p.m. Auditorium Museu Coleção Berardo.

Abstract

If the external image of the Earth that would become known as Blue Marble (Apollo 17, 1972) signalled a revitalised alliance between a humanism that reflected itself and the utopia of a universalism without geopolitical borders, the image of the Black Hole (2019) revealed an eminently non-human horizon, an abyss of pure abstraction in which we can never be reflected. From a dialogue between these two images, we seek to investigate the hypotheses of a new planetary regime that has been discussed and in which the ecological coexistence between multiple modes of existence - human, natural and technical -, the theses of the Anthropocene and the entropic indeterminacy that haunts any total representation of human activity are played out.
