The “FEMglocal - Glocal feminist movements: interactions and contradictions” research project, funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) through national funds (PTDC/COM-CSS/4049/2021), made its mark at the inaugural FoM - Future of Magazine Conference: Connecting in a disconnected age, held at the Lusófona University, Lisbon University Center, from July 19th to 21st.
During this event, Sónia Lamy (FEMglocal’s researcher) delivered the presentation “The (news) value of feminist activism - an analysis of the news coverage of two Portuguese newsmagazines”, developed in collaboration with Célia Taborda (FEMglocal’s Co-PI), Carla Cerqueira (FEMglocal’s PI), and Ana Sofia Pereira (FEMglocal’s postdoctoral fellow).
As part of the “Magazine vs. Journalism Studies" panel, Sónia Lamy delved into the “news values” identified in the journalistic coverage of feminist movements in Portugal and explored whether these values have gained more prominence in today’s media landscape. Through the analysis of the magazines Sábado and Visão, she sought to understand how these values manifest within these publications, discussing what forms of feminist activism are portrayed, which events trigger journalistic coverage of feminism, and how the “news values” influence both feminist activism and the public sphere. Sónia Lamy’s presentation sparked a stimulating exchange of ideas regarding the portrayal of feminisms in Portuguese media and the resulting impact (or lack thereof) on the public sphere.
