CICANT joins the 5th Journalists' Congress

Between the 18 and 21 January 2024, São Jorge Cinema will host the 5th Journalists' Congress. In the year we celebrate 50 years of the revolution on 25 April 1974, the event will be conducted under the theme "Jornalismo, Sempre". Several CICANT researchers will participate in the event.

Around the question "Does Journalism need Media Literacy?" the congress will hold a special panel focused on media literacy. Maria José Brites, PI of the YouNDigital project - Young People, News and Digital Citizenship (PTDC/COM-OUT/0243/2021), will participate in the session together with Vitor Tomé (Council of Europe and YouNDigital project consultant) and Sofia Branco (Media Literacy and Journalism Association), and Ramón Salaverría (University of Navarra / Iberifier Consortium). The panel will take place on 20 January.

The day before, 19 January, Alexandra Figueira, a collaborator researcher at CICANT, will participate in a session dedicated to journalists' working conditions. Her intervention will be based on the preliminary results of the study "Precariousness in Journalism" by the Interuniversity Network for Studies on Journalists.

Lusófona University students join the Congress newsroom
Besides the regular congress activities, under the guidance of researchers Carla Rodrigues Cardoso and Sónia Lamy, several Lusófona University students from undergraduate programmes and the Master's Degree in Journalism and Media Studies will join the Congress Newsroom. Diana Cunha, Inês Martins, João Oliveira, Rita Casqueiro, and Catarina Santos are some of the students who will document the congress. The event will also count on the collaboration of researcher Ana Figueiras and professors Carlos Andrade and Mésicles Helin, who are responsible for the website and social networks.

Remembering Mário Mesquita
On 21 January, a special tribute will be paid to Mário Mesquita, one of Portugal's most relevant figures in politics and journalism in recent decades. Mário Mesquita was the mind behind the Journalism course at Lusófona University and a professor at DCC/ECATI until his unexpected death in 2022. The tribute is being organised by researcher Carla Rodrigues Cardoso, with the participation of CICANT researcher Sara Pina and António José Teixeira, information director at RTP.
The 5th Journalists' Congress is an initiative of the journalists' unions, Casa Imprensa and Clube de Jornalistas, chaired by SIC journalist Pedro Coelho.
