Society for Animation Studies awards Lea Vidakovic

The Society for Animation Studies (SAS), an international organization devoted to the study of animation history and theory, has recognized Lea Vidakovic with an honorable mention for the Millie Young Award for Best Practice-as-Research in Animation. Vidakovic earned the accolade for her “Family Portrait” animated installation work, developed during her PhD studies at ADM, Nanyang Technological University in Singapore.

Founded in 1987 by Dr. Harvey Deneroff, the SAS hosts an annual conference at various global locations, showcasing members' recent research. The society also presents several awards for scholarly work, including the Norman McLaren/Evelyn Lambart awards for best book and article (presented on alternating years), and the Maureen Furniss Award for Best Student Paper on Animated Media.

Since its premiere in June 2023, Vidakovic’s “Family Portrait” film has been featured at 90 international animation festivals and has won 18 awards. In July, it received the Rigo Mora Award for Best Animated Short Film at the Festival Internacional de Cine en Guadalajara, one of Latin America’s largest festivals. Created by Guillermo del Toro, this award grants the winner automatic eligibility for the 2025 Animated Short Film Oscar.
