CICANT researcher proposes new framework for Classifying Relationships in Open Research Europe article

Daniel Cardoso, a CICANT researcher, has recently published an insightful essay on Open Research Europe. The essay delves into the politics and implications of terminology in social and human sciences, with a special focus on marginalized groups. In the article, Daniel Cardoso critiques existing naming conventions, emphasizing the significant power that researchers hold when choosing labels, particularly in studies related to marginalized or subordinated communities.

Amidst ongoing debates around terms like "consensual non-monogamies" and "ethical non-monogamies", the researcher proposes an innovative labeling system that seeks to introduce a more neutral, less morally charged framework. The new system is built on the concept of "explicitness", offering a tripartite structure: Explicit, Implicit, and Covert relationships. Importantly, this framework applies to both monogamous and non-monogamous relationships, avoiding the moral implications often embedded in current terminology.

Daniel Cardoso’s article also explores the limitations of this system, its compatibility with other frameworks, and anticipates possible critics, providing a pathway for future refinements. This proposal represents a significant move toward fostering more equitable and precise language in relationship studies.
