Release Windows in Post-COVID Film Distribution - New Crescine report available

CresCine's newly released study examines the evolving landscape of European film release strategies. While the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated experimentation with digital-first strategies, the industry has largely reverted to traditional theatrical exclusivity, reaffirming its role as a key driver of profitability and audience engagement. The report identifies a balance between innovation and preservation, emphasizing the need for flexible approaches tailored to different markets and genres.

Through qualitative interviews and case studies, the study highlights lessons learned in film distribution, including the limitations of shorter release windows and the outcomes of simultaneous digital and theatrical releases. Despite the digital shift, many distributors recognize the enduring value of cinema-going experiences and continue to prioritize theatrical releases while cautiously exploring hybrid strategies.

As the industry adapts to post-pandemic realities, the study recommends a strategic approach that prioritizes theatrical exclusivity while leveraging digital platforms to complement traditional models. By embracing flexibility and partnerships, European film distributors can navigate the changing landscape and ensure sustainable growth in the years ahead.
