FEMglocal contributes to OSCE Parliamentary Assembly dialogue on gender equality in Portugal

On June 29, FEMglocal took part in a special meeting convened by the Special Representative on Gender Issues of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE PA) Parliamentary Assembly, Dr. Hedy Fry, held at the Alfândega do Porto Congress Centre. The session brought together Portuguese civil society individuals working on human rights, women’s rights, and issues related to gender equality.

Represented by principal investigators Carla Cerqueira (PI) and Célia Taborda (Co-PI), along with postdoctoral researcher Ana Sofia Pereira, the FEMglocal team shared insights from their ongoing research on feminist movements in Portugal. Their intervention addressed the complex landscape of gender issues in the country, highlighting fragility of some public policies, the need to adopt intersectional approaches, and the importance of inclusive frameworks that recognize non-binary and LGBTQIAP+ identities in gender equality efforts.

Organized in the context of the OSCE PA’s Annual Session in Porto (June 29–July 3, 2025), the meeting aimed to foster open and informal dialogue between the OSCE PA and local stakeholders. It provided an opportunity for the Special Representative to hear first-hand from those working on the ground, with discussions encompassing topics such as gender-based violence, sexual and reproductive rights, and the political underrepresentation of marginalized groups.

FEMglocal – Glocal feminist movements: interactions and contradictions is a research project funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) through national funds (PTDC/COM-CSS/4049/2021 / DOI 10.54499/PTDC/COM-CSS/4049/2021).
