FEMglocal researchers present poster on feminist mapping at HCI International 2025

From June 22 to 27, FEMglocal participated online in the 27th International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction (HCI International 2025), held at the Gothia Towers Hotel and Swedish Exhibition & Congress Centre in Gothenburg, Sweden. The team presented the poster “A Cartography of Portuguese Feminisms: Memory as Resistance, Mapping as Mobilisation”, which introduces an innovative digital tool to document and amplify feminist movements in Portugal.

Developed by FEMglocal researchers Andreia Pinto de Sousa, Ana Sofia Pereira (postdoctoral researcher), Célia Taborda (Co-PI), and Carla Cerqueira (PI), along with project collaborator Irina Drofa, the poster showcased the interactive digital map currently being built within the FEMglocal research framework. The platform aims to preserve the memory of feminist associations and collectives across Portugal by offering an accessible, participatory, and inclusive cartographic resource. Rooted in a human-centered design methodology, the project integrates user research, co-design sessions, and iterative prototyping with diverse stakeholders such as students, journalists, and activists. The resulting tool addresses critical gaps in the digital archiving of feminist histories, countering the limitations of mainstream platforms governed by corporate logics and algorithmic biases.

The map not only visualizes geographic and historical data but also enables users to explore multimedia materials, submit information, and contribute directly to the growing digital archive. It serves as a resource for activists, researchers, journalists, students, and engaged citizens alike, fostering transgenerational memory, critical engagement, and digital citizenship.

The project’s participation in HCI International 2025 highlights its contribution to feminist digital historiography and opens up future opportunities for international partnerships and transnational mapping efforts. A peer-reviewed publication stemming from the poster is forthcoming.
