On September 6, at 14h30, the Cinemateca Portuguesa – Museu do Cinema will host the launch of the book Cosmorama. O Medium Esquecido, published in connection with the exhibition O Cosmorama em Lisboa – As Viagens Virtuais no Século XIX.
This publication revives the forgotten visual pleasure of viewing images through lenses, a tradition that once fascinated European audiences, from itinerant optical boxes to the refined cosmorama exhibitions of the 19th century. Offering both a scientific and editorial complement to the exhibition, the book provides an in-depth exploration of the devices, images, and audiences that shaped this cultural phenomenon.
The volume brings together contributions from researchers of the Curiositas project, presenting the investigation that underpinned the exhibition and shedding light on the intersections of art, science, and media history.
