On 29 September, ERC - Regulatory Authority for the Media - held its 4th internal talk - ERConversa. The session was conducted under the theme "Publics and Media audiences". CICANT Researcher Maria José Brites and YouNDigital researcher Marisa Torres da Silva shared reflections and research findings on news consumption practices, understanding algorithms, and contemporary challenges in journalism.
Maria José Brites presented her research on young people, news and digital citizenship in Portugal, exploring the different ways in which young people perceive and interact with algorithms. The study identifies five distinct profiles, ranging from ineptitude to enchantment, and seeks to map clusters of news consumption, considering, for example, the influence of users being Portuguese or not.
The initiative contributed to ERC's internal debate on its regulatory role in monitoring media dynamics and strengthening its responsibility to protect audiences, particularly younger ones.
