Researchers from the MeLCi Lab participated in the 2026 edition of the International Media Literacy Research Symposium (IMLRS), held in Rome, Italy, from 4 to 6 June. The event brought together scholars from across Europe and beyond to discuss current developments, challenges and innovations in media literacy research.
During the symposium, Lucia Mesquita presented the study “Mapping AI Literacy, Agency and Disinformation Resilience in Higher Education: Futures of Media and Information Literacy in an AI-driven Europe”. The presentation introduced the analytical framework developed for Work Package 2 of the Erasmus+ project AI-LITERATE, which investigates how higher education institutions in four European countries are responding to the opportunities and challenges posed by artificial intelligence. The research examines the extent to which universities are integrating AI into institutional policies, teaching practices, and strategies related to ethics, literacy, and resilience to disinformation.
MeLCi Lab researcher Margarida Maneta chaired the panel “Media Literacy as Situated Processes: Contextualised Practices, Concrete Changes”, alongside Denise Mensonides, Alexander Smit and Igor Kanižaj. As part of the session, she presented findings from her ongoing research with older adults, exploring media literacy through intergenerational dialogue and everyday practices. The work is connected to her doctoral research and to the project YouNDigital – Young People, News and Digital Citizenship, which examines how different generations engage with news and digital media.
