On 7 May 2026, Nuno Borges de Araújo, architect and photo historian, delivered the guest lecture "Women in Portuguese Professional Photography, 1844–1910" to Bachelor's and Master's students in Photography at Lusófona University - University Center of Lisbon.
The lecture, organized by Early Visual Media Lab, explored the history of women in Portuguese professional photography during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, drawing on historical records and photographic archives to examine the contributions of female photographers whose work has often remained underrepresented in the country's photographic history.
By engaging with archival materials and historical photographs, students had the opportunity to deepen their understanding of the social, cultural, and professional contexts in which these women worked, while reflecting on the importance of recovering overlooked narratives within the history of photography.
The session reinforced the value of connecting historical research with contemporary education, encouraging students to critically engage with Portugal's photographic heritage and its diverse voices.
