On November 11, 2025, at 2:30 PM, the LabCLIP/ CICANT will host the closing event of the series “Independence and the Projects of New African Nations: 50 Years in Debate” at the Salão Nobre of Lusófona University – Porto University Center.
This final session coincides with the 50th anniversary of Angola’s independence and will feature two roundtable discussions. The first will focus on Angola’s independence, while the second will reflect on the independence processes of all five PALOP countries. Participants include Branca Clara das Neves (writer), Francisco Soares (CITCEM/FLUP), Francisco Topa (CITCEM/FLUP), Hugo Mendes (RDP), José Carlos Venâncio (UBI), and Orquídea Ribeiro (UTAD).
Launched on June 30, the series organized by researchers Lurdes Macedo and Sheila Khan has aimed to explore the complexities of the Portuguese-speaking African countries’ paths to independence, examining both the late colonial context and the nation-building projects undertaken in the post-independence period.
The LabCLIP / CICANT invites the academic community and the general public to join this concluding event for an in-depth reflection and debate on the histories and projects of the new African nations.
