YouNDigital discusses Public Policies, Youth and Media Education

The YouNDigital project held its wrap-up event, “Public Policies, Youth and Media Education” on December 4th at Lusófona University – Lisbon University Centre. Celebrating an important milestone in the project’s trajectory, the event promoted a genuine and constructive forum for dialogue among leading institutions and specialists working to shape media education and youth-focused public policies in Portugal.

Organised by CICANT Maria José Brites and Teresa Sofia Castro, coordinators of the project, together with researcher Margarida Maneta, the event brought together some of the most relevant voices in the field to reflect on media literacy, young people’s news practices, and policy implications emerging from YouNDigital’s research.

The morning round table on Media Education featured Alexandre Le Voci Sayad (ZeitGeist), Carla Barros (Directorate-General for Education – DGE), Paulo Couraceiro (GILM), and Sérgio Gomes da Silva (#PortugalMediaLab#). The discussion, moderated by Paulo Resendes (LUSA), highlighted the need to continue to promote medial literacy from different fields and with diverse publics.

The second round table, devoted to Public Policies, brought together Carla Martins from the Media Regulatory Authority (ERC), José Reis from the Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum (AIMA), Rui Dinis from the Portuguese Institute for Sport and Youth (IPDJ), and Sara Machado from Creative Europe, moderated by Ana Sofia Freitas (RTP Notícias). The session underscored the relevance of connecting university and public bodies and to consider public policies grounded on local needs.

In the afternoon, the private workshop led by Alexandre Le Voci Sayad offered an in-depth exploration of advocacy and social impact, providing participants with practical insights and strategies for furthering media education initiatives.

The event was organised within the scope of the YouNDigital project - Youth, News and Digital Citizenship (PTDC/COM-OUT/0243/2021), a project funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology.
