Caleidoscopio journal returns for a second series

Caleidoscopio – Revista de Comunicação e Cultura is the journal of the Communication Sciences Department of ECATI, Lusófona University. Founded in 2002, Caleidoscopio returns in early 2026 for its second series.
Caleidoscopio is being relaunched to consolidate its position as an open-access platform dedicated to critical research in the field of communication sciences. The initiative was carried out by an editorial team that includes CICANT researchers Teresa Maia Castro, José Gomes Pinto, Manuel Bogalheiro, and Joana Bicacro.
As part of a “year zero” in this second series, Caleidoscopio recently published a Special Issue on Fashion and Sustainability, edited by CICANT researcher Alexandra Cruchinho and Benilde Reis, both from Lusófona University.
Open to publishing outstanding research across a wide range of topics within and at the margins of communication sciences, Caleidoscopio specialises in critical approaches to communication and media technologies. With an interdisciplinary orientation, the journal operates at the crossroads of philosophy of communication, media theory, philosophy of technology, critical theory, and aesthetics.
The journal places particular emphasis on the intersection of communication, media, and the arts in contemporary societies — from the proliferation of visual culture and developments in the cultural industries to the aestheticization of politics and everyday life; from questions of archive and materialities to virtualization and operational media. It welcomes contributions that address the implications of contemporary media aesthetics for theorising communication itself. Caleidoscopio aims to be a worldwide, multilingual (English, Spanish, Portuguese, and French), high-standard open-access platform for critical and speculative thinking in all areas it covers.
A forthcoming standard issue, titled “Becoming Media: Operativity and Medialogical Structures”, is currently in preparation and will be published in February.
A call for papers for the second issue is currently open until 15 March. Under the title “The sleep of digital reason? Dreaming of a creative machine in the age of AI”, this issue, edited by José Gomes Pinto and Alexander Gerner (CICANT), will be dedicated to the medial shadows of reality and the rational monsters of automated writing. It will explore their genealogies, infrastructures, and transformative effects on literary and media culture, as well as within generative media arts and philosophy.
