CICANT hosts International Seminar on Intergenerationality and Digital Citizenship

Lusófona University, through the Centre for Research in Applied Communication, Culture and New Technologies (CICANT), will host the International Seminar on Intergenerationality and Digital Citizenship on 25 March 2026. The event will take place online from 10:00 to 12:30 (WET) via Microsoft Teams.

The seminar is organised in the framework of the STORYline project (10.54499/2023.11571.PEX), a national research initiative funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), which explores youth citizenship through intergenerational approaches and digital narratives. The project seeks to understand how intergenerational relationships, adult role models, and digital media shape young people's narratives of citizenship, with a particular focus on identity formation, civic participation, and engagement. Rooted in the Portuguese context - marked by cultural diversity, an ageing population, and digital divides — STORYline aims to contribute to broader international debates on young people's civic lives in a digital age.

The session will feature an international panel of experts bringing diverse perspectives on intergenerational communication and ageing. Invited speakers include Carla Ganito from the Faculty of Human Sciences at Universidade Católica Portuguesa (FCH-UCP/CECC) (Portugal), Viivi Korpela from Vanhustyön keskusliitto (Sweden), and Matteo Dressler from the Foundation for European Progressive Studies (Brussels). Together, they will address intersectional approaches to age studies, migration and vulnerable populations, lifelong and intergenerational learning, and European policy perspectives on ageing and communication.

A keynote talk will be delivered by Julian McDougall (Bournemouth University), under the topic "(Digital) Media Literacy for Positive Change: by citizens, between generations". The researcher will delve into his latest work to conduct a reflection on Media Literacy as a human right and one of the fundamental elements for civic resilience and, ultimately, for healthier media ecosystems.

The seminar programme includes an opening session, a keynote lecture followed by Q&A, a roundtable discussion, and a closing session. The full programme will be available soon.

Participation is free of charge, subject to prior registration.REGISTER HERE.
