The book Atmospheres and Digital Media: Connection and Disconnection Across Everyday Life, edited by Ana Jorge and Sofia P. Caldeira, has just been released by Bristol University Press.
This edited volume brings together the findings of the FCT exploratory project On&Off, developed between 2023 and 2024, and features contributions from a team of researchers affiliated with CICANT. The publication is available in open access, with the support of CICANT, and can be accessed here: https://bristoluniversitypress.co.uk/atmospheres-and-digital-media
Spanning a wide range of contexts—from parenting and pilgrimage to activism and mourning—the book examines how digital connection and disconnection shape the emotional texture of everyday life. Grounded in the concept of affective atmospheres, the contributions explore how feelings emerge through interactions between people, platforms and places.
Drawing on rich empirical examples, the volume highlights how digital media permeate domestic spaces, belief systems, rituals and political practices, infusing them with emotion, tension and meaning. Through this lens, the book offers a nuanced understanding of the role of digital media in contemporary social life.
