CICANT launches new Exploratory Lab - The MagLab

CICANT announces the launching of its first pop-up Lab, - The MagLab - Magazine Media Lab, the first international research Lab specialized in the field of Magazine Studies. Its primary goal is the aggregation, consolidation and development of Magazine Studies as an independent field of study.

MagLab is part of CICANT, a research centre of Universidade Lusófona, developing its activities with autonomy and independence. It has core researcher Carla Rodrigues Cardoso as scientific coordinator and core researcher Ana Figueiras as assistant scientific coordinator. MagLab also includes Tim Holmes, leading proponent of Magazine Studies in Europe, as adviser.

MagLab is supported by CICANT's know-how, which focuses on applied research, dissemination, and knowledge transfer to the community. It will develop its activity in partnership with other CICANT Labs and ObsMeL - Observatory for Media in Lusophony. MagLab will develop research on magazines and work with the industry, aiming at transforming and developing this medium in the digital age

First steps

MagLab is developing a magazine studies researchers net (MagNet) that will connect scholars worldwide. This initiative brings together researchers that have been studying magazines or want to start studying this scientific field. In addition, MagNet will facilitate international research projects between academia and industry.

On 21 and 22 July 2023, MagLab will organize the first edition of the Future of Magazine biennial conference, at Lusófona University, Lisbon. The topic of the first Future of Magazine conference will be "Connecting in a disconnected age" and the Call for Papers will be released by the end of 2022.
