PROSECUW Final Conference gathers partners and key stakeholders in Nicosia

150 participants in person and 750 online, 30 experts representing 10 countries and 15 European organisations met last 25th April in Nicosia, in the mythical area of Chateau Status, in 2 panels and 3 workshops under the theme "Protecting and Securing our Religious Heritage through Multisectoral Collaboration". The conference brought together at the same table public authorities, security officers, religious leaders, decision makers, local communities and civil society actors with the aim of strengthening the protection of places of worship in European countries, creating a fertile ground for open dialogue, the exchange of valuable knowledge and practices, the creation of local and international synergies and cooperation between them, with the ultimate goal of developing their capacity to counter radicalisation and hate speech in an effort to promote inter-religious respect and diversity.

The event was also attended by several ambassadors and the European Commission representative Tamara Muñoz, who gave the following testimony:

“Public spaces are particularly vulnerable to terrorist attacks due to their accessible and open nature and with the Security Union Strategy and the EU Counter-Terrorism Agenda, the Commission is taking steps to support EU Member States in enhancing their protection. Furthermore, protecting places of worship of all faiths is an absolute priority for the EU and an important element of the ‘’protect’’ pillar under the EU Counter-Terrorism Agenda. The Commission will continue to fund projects that focus on the protection of places of worship and that foster cooperation between different faith communities and national authorities across the EU.”

This moment also marked the end of two years of work of this project whose main objective was to establish cooperation between public authorities and religious leaders and congregations in order to better understand security threats, promote awareness-raising activities and create manuals for sharing best practices and relevant tools among EU stakeholders and of which we are proud to have been part.
