YouNDigital debates Youth and News in international seminar
The relationship between young people and the news was the focus of the seminar "Let's talk about Youth and News" promoted by the project YouNDigital - Youth, News and Digital Citizenship (PTDC/COM-OUT/0243/2021) and that brought five international experts to Lusófona University (Porto) and CICANT.
Irene Costera Meijer (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam) (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam) shared preliminary results on youth news consumption on TikTok. Lynn Schofield-Clark (University of Denver) reflected on the paradigm shift and implication of algorithms in the news landscape. Marcel Broersma (Centre for Media and Journalism Studies, University of Groningen) brought to debate the problematisation of trust in news through the eyes of younger people. Nic Newman (Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, University of Oxford) shared data from the latest Reuters report on new patterns of consumption and resistance to news. And Vítor Tomé (Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa, CIES-ISCTE-Instituto Universitário de Lisboa) focused his intervention on the journalists' role in the promotion of critical competences.
